Long term care may also be provided at an Intermediate Nursing Facility licensed to provide limited nursing and rehabilitation services. Intermediate Nursing Facilities are only required to have a registered nurse on duty during one 8-hour shift per day. Although these facilities may provide custodial care, they do not offer skilled nursing.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) are becoming more popular as the nation's population ages. These Life Care Communities provide the full continuum of long term care from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing care. Since all of these services are provided at one location or property, an individual can make a more permanent home in retirement while getting the additional help and services they need when they need them.
